Producing digital music has to start somewhere – and that somewhere is your computer. There are only two real specifications you should pay attention to, and those are RAM and processor speed.

We’ve put together our favourite five laptops for you to browse and choose from. We’ve considered both the RAM and the processor speed, which should be a minimum of 8GB RAM speed and a processor clock speed of 2.4GHz – 4.2GHz.

Apple 13” MacBook Pro – $1,312.20 (£964.99)

Packing a 7th generation 2.3 GHz dual-core Intel i5 processor, the Macbook Pro is the first choice for many music producers – both established and newcomers.

Its powerful 128/256GB SSD allows the MacBook Pro will be able to quickly load and process multiple software suites at one time.

8 GB of RAM, the minimum amount needed to process most audio editing software tools, but you could upgrade to 16GB too.

A whopping 10 hours of battery is the optimum amount for music producers. If you’re on the road a lot, chances are you’ll find a plug socket in that time.

ASUS ROG STRIX – $2,039.69 (£1499.99)

A gaming laptop that doubles as the ultimate beat-making machine, it’s not very surprising that it’s on our list because of its quick FPS rates and ultra-fast processing power.

With a big terabyte of HDD storage and 256 GB SSD… you’ll never need to worry about the storage of your projects. A bonus is that these two storage drives work together to speed up your computer! Your HDD can store your work in progress pieces while the SSD stores the computer processing data!

As well as these powerhouse hard drives, its 16GB of RAM won’t hinder your workflow either. Not only is this a powerful laptop, but it’s also customisable. The RAM doesn’t even need to stick around, you can swap and upgrade it as you please.

The average battery life sits at about 9 hours which, as far as laptops go, is a strong reason to buy this model over many others.

Razer Blade Stealth – $175.40 (£128.99)

A laptop with a quad-core processer that includes an 8th generation i7 processor with powerful speeds that’ll see you through your production session without blinking.

The Stealth features a touchscreen for further flexibility and navigation that is super user-friendly. Are you a comfort-comes-first producer? Well, sit on the sofa to finish some editing, because you can do that with this machine!

Going hand in hand with the touch screen is the all-powerful 16 GB of RA.! This opens a lot of doors in terms of how much you can have going on at one time, which makes it better suited for a large number of music editing software tools that will make your production sessions a dream with the touch screen feature.

On top of the 16GB of RAM comes the 256GB of SSD storage with 6 hours of battery life! That’s a lot of power inside its 13.3″ screen size

Lenovo IdeaPad Y700 – $815.87 (£599.99)

The Lenovo IdeaPad is a portable gaming device, but the high specs for gaming also come into great use for music production!

The bad boys pack a whole terabyte of HDD storage with sonic speeds, accompanied by its quad-core Intel i7 processor.

RAM comes in hot at 8GB like the other music-making machines we have suggested here, but a setback is the short 4 to 5 hours of use at one time. This isn’t good news if you’re making music on the go all the time. But a plus is the super quiet fan that kicks in when the laptop has been on for quite some time.

If you are the sort to be on the move all the time, the durable build of the IdeaPad will treat you well.

Dell XPS 13 9360 – $828.12 (£609)

Dell presents a competitive model for low budgets: the XPS 13 9360.

With 8GB of RAM, which we can’t upgrade due to soldering, most bedroom producers will find the XPS 13 a resourceful tool for music creation.

A 7th gen dual-core i5 processor will process big music sessions, and its 128 GB SSD storage will host and run 64 bit Windows 10 operating system as smoothly as any powerful laptop.

Its 13.3″ touch screen display allows for easy usability for anyone to manipulate and automate in if only you have the desire to do so.

This computer model has the minimum specifications needed for music production, but should you have big music production sessions going on then you may find it beneficial to have an external hard drive as to not slow it down dramatically.
